Which strait separates Europe from Africa at their closest point?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Gibraltar separates Europe from Africa at their closest point.

It connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and lies between southern Spain and northern Morocco. At its narrowest point, the strait is about 14 kilometres wide. The Rock of Gibraltar rises on the European side, while the Jebel Musa area lies on the African side.

The strait has been strategically important since antiquity because it controls access between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Ancient Greek and Roman writers associated its entrance with the Pillars of Hercules. Strong currents and deep water also make the strait significant for ocean circulation. It is different from the Bosporus, which separates European and Asian parts of Turkey.
