Which Storm Front song about emotional ups and downs reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

“I Go to Extremes” is the Storm Front song about emotional ups and downs that reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Billy Joel released the song as the album’s second US single in January 1990. Its title and lyrics describe dramatic swings in mood and behavior, which led some listeners to interpret it as a song about manic depression. Joel explained that he wrote it instead as an apology to his then-wife, Christie Brinkley, for his erratic personality.

The track was produced by Joel and Mick Jones, whose involvement helped define Storm Front’s more forceful rock sound. It followed “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” another major single from the album, but its subject was personal rather than historical.

“I Go to Extremes” also performed strongly outside the main US chart. It reached No. 3 in Canada and became a top-10 entry on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary and Album Rock Tracks charts. The B-side was “When in Rome,” another Storm Front song. The song is sometimes confused with “And So It Goes,” but that later single peaked at No. 37 on the Hot 100.
