Which stage play, co-written by J.K. Rowling, continues Harry Potter’s story as an adult?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues Harry Potter’s story as an adult.

The stage play is set nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Its central characters include the adult Harry, now employed at the Ministry of Magic, and his son Albus Severus Potter. Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius, is also central to the story.

Rowling developed the story with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. Thorne wrote the script, while Rowling was credited as a co-creator of the original story. The play opened in London’s West End in 2016, and the published script was issued as a two-part special rehearsal edition.

Although it is often described as the eighth Harry Potter story, it is a stage production rather than an eighth novel by Rowling. That distinction matters when counting the original books. The play’s narrative focuses on a new generation while bringing back major characters from the earlier series.
