Which stadium hosted the first Rugby World Cup final in 1987?

The story behind the answer

Eden Park hosted the first Rugby World Cup final in 1987.

The inaugural tournament was jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia and ran from 22 May to 20 June 1987. The final took place at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, where New Zealand defeated France 29–9.

Eden Park is New Zealand’s national stadium and has a particularly strong association with the All Blacks. The venue later hosted other major Rugby World Cup matches, including the 2011 final, in which New Zealand again won the title.

The 1987 final is sometimes confused with the 1995 final, which was played at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Eden Park hosted the first final and the 2011 final, but not the 1995 decider. Its repeated use reflects both its capacity and its importance in New Zealand rugby history.
