Who was the first Black player to represent England in rugby union?
Answer
James Peters
Answer
James Peters
James Peters was the first Black player to represent England in rugby union.
Peters, born in 1879, played rugby league and rugby union and became the first Black player to play for England in either code. He won his England rugby union cap against Scotland at Inverleith in Edinburgh on 21 March 1906. He played at half-back, a position broadly comparable to the modern scrum-half or fly-half roles depending on tactical usage.
His path to international rugby was shaped by the racial barriers of Edwardian Britain. Peters had played for clubs including Plymouth and Devon, but he was unavailable for England’s match against South Africa in 1906 after South African officials objected to his selection. He later returned to the England side against Scotland.
Peters’ achievement predates the professional era by decades. England’s rugby union game became officially professional only in 1995, while Peters was making history in an amateur sporting system.
