Which Sri Lankan rock fortress was built by King Kashyapa I? Sigiriya is the answer.
Sigiriya, or Lion Rock, is an ancient fortress rising about 180 metres above the surrounding plains of central Sri Lanka. King Kashyapa I developed it into a fortified capital and palace complex in the late 5th century CE, after seizing the throne and fearing an attack from his half-brother Moggallana.
The site combined military defences with sophisticated royal design. Moats and ramparts surrounded the base, while landscaped gardens used advanced hydraulic systems, pools and fountains. The summit held the king’s palace, and the approach included frescoes, the Mirror Wall and a monumental Lion Gate. Only the lion’s paws remain beside the entrance today.
After Kashyapa’s defeat and death in 495 CE, the capital returned to Anuradhapura and Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery complex. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were also major Sri Lankan capitals, while Dambulla is famous for its cave temples, but none is the fortress identified with Kashyapa I.
