What is the highest mountain in Japan?

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, rising to 3,776 meters on the island of Honshu.

Fuji is an active stratovolcano located on the boundary between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, southwest of Tokyo. Its remarkably symmetrical cone formed through repeated volcanic activity, and the present mountain is commonly described as the youngest of three overlapping volcanic structures. The volcano’s last major eruption occurred from December 1707 into early 1708, during the Edo period.

The summit includes eight peaks, with Ken-ga-mine marking Japan’s highest point. Fuji’s snow-capped outline has made it one of Japan’s defining cultural symbols. It appears in paintings, woodblock prints, poetry, photography, and religious traditions, while the surrounding area attracts climbers and sightseers.

Mount Yari, Mount Hotaka, and Mount Kita are all prominent Japanese mountains, but they are lower than Fuji. Fuji is also a volcano rather than merely a conventional mountain peak. UNESCO recognized the mountain and related cultural sites as “Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration” in 2013.
