Which speech is honored by one of the five America250 quarters issued in 2026?

The story behind the answer

The Gettysburg Address is honored by one of the five America250 quarters issued in 2026.

The speech was delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Though brief, it became one of the best-known statements about the meaning of the American experiment and the principle of equality.

The America250 quarter places Lincoln on the obverse. Its reverse shows two hands grasping one another and includes wording associated with the speech, including the phrase “a new nation conceived in liberty.” The design extends the anniversary series beyond 1776 to a later moment when Americans debated whether the nation could endure.

The Gettysburg Address is not a founding-era document from 1776, and that is why it can be confused with other quarter themes. The five final subjects span the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Lincoln’s address.
