Lysander defeated Athens at the Battle of Notium in 406 BCE.
The Battle of Notium was fought during the later stages of the Peloponnesian War. Lysander was serving as the Spartan navarch, or fleet commander, when he confronted the Athenian fleet near Notium in western Asia Minor. The Athenian ships suffered a serious defeat while their leading commander, Alcibiades, was away from the immediate engagement.
Lysander’s victory strengthened his reputation and helped him build a close relationship with the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger, who provided financial support for the Spartan fleet. Spartan naval power had previously been weaker than Athens’, but Persian funding helped Sparta sustain maritime operations.
Lysander later returned to command and won the decisive Battle of Aegospotami in 405 BCE. Notium was therefore an important step toward Athens’ final defeat, but it was not the war’s last battle.
