Which battle in 479 BCE saw Spartan regent Pausanias lead the Greek victory over Persia?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE saw Spartan regent Pausanias lead the Greek victory over Persia.

Plataea was the decisive land battle of the second Persian invasion of Greece. The allied Greek army included contingents from several city-states, with Sparta providing the leading military force. Pausanias acted as regent for the young Spartan king Pleistarchus, rather than ruling as a king in his own right.

The Persian army was commanded by Mardonius, a leading general and son-in-law of King Darius I. Mardonius was killed during the fighting, and the Persian defeat ended the immediate Persian campaign in mainland Greece. The Greek victory is often discussed alongside the naval Battle of Mycale, fought in the same year. Plataea should not be confused with Marathon, fought in 490 BCE, or Salamis, the major Greek naval victory of 480 BCE.
