Agis II commanded the Peloponnesian army at the Battle of Mantinea in 418 BCE.
Mantinea was one of the largest land battles of the Archidamian phase of the Peloponnesian War. Sparta and its allies faced a coalition led by Argos, which included Athens and several other Greek states.
Agis was a Spartan Eurypontid king. His army won a decisive victory, restoring Sparta’s position in the Peloponnese after a period in which Argos and its allies had challenged Spartan influence.
The battle is notable for the unusual scale of the forces involved and for the Spartan victory despite difficulties during the deployment. Agis continued to rule until his death in 400 BCE.
