Barcelona hosted the Grand Départ of the 2026 Tour de France. The opening departure makes Barcelona the starting city for the 113th edition of the race and marks the Tour’s return to Spain for a major opening celebration.
The 2026 Grand Départ is planned to begin with a team time trial through Barcelona on 4 July. The route is designed to showcase the city, travelling from the waterfront toward central landmarks before reaching Montjuïc. The second stage also begins in Catalonia, helping establish the region as the Tour’s launch point before the race crosses into France.
Barcelona has strong cycling and sporting credentials. It hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, and Montjuïc has long been associated with major cycling events, including finishes of the Volta a Catalunya. The Tour’s organisers therefore gain both an international city backdrop and a route with a suitably challenging closing climb.
Seville, Bilbao and Madrid are all important Spanish cities, but none is the host of the 2026 Tour Grand Départ. Barcelona is the specific city named for the opening of this edition.
