Which SpaceX mission first carried a Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station?
Answer
Crew Dragon Demo-1
Answer
Crew Dragon Demo-1
Crew Dragon Demo-1 was the first SpaceX mission to carry a Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station.
Launched on March 2, 2019, Demo-1 was an uncrewed flight designed to test the spacecraft’s systems, launch vehicle, approach procedures, docking capability, and return to Earth. The capsule autonomously docked with the station the following day.
The spacecraft carried a sensor-equipped mannequin named Ripley, rather than astronauts. It returned safely to Earth on March 8, 2019, splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.
Demo-1 paved the way for Crew Dragon Demo-2, which carried NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in 2020. Demo-1 and Demo-2 are therefore different missions: the first tested the spacecraft without a crew, while the second performed the crewed demonstration.
