NASA launched the two Voyager spacecraft.
Voyager 2 lifted off on August 20, 1977, followed by Voyager 1 on September 5. Although Voyager 1 launched later, its faster trajectory let it reach Jupiter and Saturn first. Both launches used Titan IIIE–Centaur rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The missions were originally developed as the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn project, a scaled-down version of an ambitious “Grand Tour” concept. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed the mission and built the spacecraft, but NASA was the U.S. agency responsible for the program and launches.
A common mix-up is confusing NASA with JPL. JPL is a NASA field center and managed Voyager, while NASA is the agency named as the mission operator. JAXA, Roscosmos, and ESA have operated other major planetary missions, but not the Voyager probes.
