“Blame Canada” was the South Park movie song nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It appears in the 1999 film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and was written by Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman.
The satirical number mocks parental scapegoating. In the film, South Park parents blame Canada after their children watch the allegedly corrupting Terrance and Phillip movie Asses of Fire. Sheila Broflovski leads the complaint, while the song’s exaggerated patriotism turns political panic into musical comedy.
The nomination came at the 72nd Academy Awards, where the song lost to “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan. Robin Williams performed a sanitized version at the ceremony because the original lyrics included profanity. “Kyle’s Mom” and “Mountain Town” are also South Park songs, but they were not the nominated number.
