Which South African political party did Nelson Mandela lead to victory in 1994?

The story behind the answer

Nelson Mandela led the African National Congress to victory in South Africa’s 1994 election.

The African National Congress, or ANC, won the country’s first national election based on universal adult suffrage. The election took place from 26 to 29 April 1994, and the ANC received about 62.6 percent of the national vote. Mandela became president after the result was finalized.

The election ended the formal apartheid system and created a government of national unity. The ANC formed the central governing party, while the National Party and Inkatha Freedom Party also held important roles in the transition.

Mandela had joined the ANC in 1944 and later served as its president from 1991 to 1997. The 1994 victory therefore represented the culmination of decades of political organization, imprisonment, negotiations, and mass participation.
