Which South African desert region is known for its succulent plants and desolate landscape?

The story behind the answer

The South African desert region known for its succulent plants and desolate landscape is the Richtersveld.

The Richtersveld occupies South Africa’s northwestern Northern Cape, beside the Orange River and the Namibian border. Its scenery shifts from sandy coastal plains to rugged volcanic mountains and dry river valleys. Though intensely arid, it supports extraordinary botanical diversity, especially succulents and aloe species adapted to scarce rainfall.

Morning fog from the Atlantic is crucial to life here. In some parts, annual rainfall is extremely low, so plants and animals depend on moisture carried inland by coastal mist. One of the region’s most distinctive plants is the halfmensboom, or “half-person tree,” while several quiver-tree species are also associated with the landscape.

The Richtersveld is not simply another name for the Namib or Kalahari deserts. It is also a cultural landscape shaped by the Nama people, whose seasonal livestock migrations helped preserve the area’s fragile ecosystem. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
