Which soul group recorded the 1971 album 'There's a Riot Goin' On'?

The story behind the answer

Which soul group recorded the 1971 album “There’s a Riot Goin’ On”? “Sly and the Family Stone.”

There’s a Riot Goin’ On is the fifth studio album by the American funk and soul group Sly and the Family Stone. Epic Records released it on November 1, 1971, after recording sessions conducted mainly in 1970 and 1971. It followed the group’s bright, openly communal 1960s sound with a darker and more inward-looking approach.

Sly Stone dominated the production, using extensive overdubbing, tape manipulation, and an early drum machine. The resulting mix was dense, gritty, and often deliberately murky. Its mood reflected disillusionment with fame, the fading optimism of the counterculture, and the turbulent political climate of the early 1970s.

The album topped both the Billboard 200 and the U.S. Soul Albums chart. Its lead single, “Family Affair,” became a major No. 1 hit. The title was also shaped by Marvin Gaye’s contemporaneous album What’s Going On.
