The soul singer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both with The Impressions and as a solo artist was Curtis Mayfield. He entered with The Impressions in 1991 and received a second induction as a solo performer in 1999.
Mayfield helped define Chicago soul through his work as The Impressions’ singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer. Songs such as “Keep On Pushing,” “People Get Ready,” and “We’re a Winner” combined gospel-influenced harmonies with messages of dignity, faith, and Black freedom.
After leaving the group, he built a major solo career through the Curtom label. His 1970 debut album, Curtis, established his socially conscious solo style, while the Super Fly soundtrack produced enduring songs including “Freddie’s Dead” and “Pusherman.”
The double induction is sometimes confused with ordinary recognition of a group member, but Mayfield was honored in two distinct capacities. His solo induction also reflected his influence as a songwriter, producer, arranger, and performer beyond The Impressions.
