Sonic Youth’s album featuring “Kool Thing” and “Disappearer” is Goo.
Released on June 26, 1990, Goo was Sonic Youth’s sixth studio album and its major-label debut. The band recorded it after signing with DGC Records, while producer Nick Sansano and the group shaped a sound that retained its experimental guitar work but was more accessible than much of its earlier independent material.
“Kool Thing” became one of the album’s best-known songs. It features a guest appearance by Public Enemy rapper Chuck D and responds to an interview with singer Kim Gordon. The album also includes “Dirty Boots,” “Mote,” and “Mildred Pierce,” demonstrating the band’s mix of feedback, alternate tunings, and melodic songwriting.
Goo reached number 96 on the Billboard 200 and helped bring Sonic Youth to a wider audience. It is often confused with Daydream Nation, the band’s acclaimed 1988 album, but Goo was the first Sonic Youth release on a major label.
