Released on April 25, 1994, Parklife was Blur’s third studio album and a breakthrough in the group’s career. Its songs moved between sharp character sketches, energetic guitar pop, orchestral passages and spoken-word elements, creating a deliberately varied portrait of contemporary British life.
“Girls & Boys” became one of Blur’s best-known songs and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. The title track, “End of a Century” and “To the End” also helped make the album a major commercial and critical success.
Parklife is often discussed in connection with the mid-1990s Britpop movement, though Blur’s music drew on a wider range of influences. The album is distinct from The Great Escape, which followed in 1995 and included “Country House.”
