Give Up was The Postal Service’s 2003 debut studio album.
The album was created by musician and producer Jimmy Tamborello with Death Cab for Cutie vocalist and guitarist Ben Gibbard. Because the two musicians worked remotely by exchanging recorded parts, the project took its name from the United States Postal Service, whose mail system inspired the collaboration’s title.
Give Up blends indie pop, electronic music, and alternative songwriting. Jenny Lewis and Jen Wood contributed vocals, while songs such as “Such Great Heights,” “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight,” and “We Will Become Silhouettes” became especially well known.
The album was released by Sub Pop and became one of the label’s best-selling releases. It is sometimes mistakenly treated as a Death Cab for Cutie album because Gibbard sings on it, but The Postal Service was a separate project. Give Up was followed by no second studio album, although the group reunited for performances and anniversary activity.
