Fleetwood Mac earned its only Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with “Dreams.”
Stevie Nicks wrote the song during the recording of Rumours, the band’s 1977 studio album. The track grew from a simple keyboard idea and became a restrained, atmospheric contrast to the album’s more forceful rock songs.
“Dreams” reached No. 1 in the United States in June 1977. It was Fleetwood Mac’s only Hot 100 chart-topper, even though the group placed several other famous singles high on the chart. The song’s success helped make Rumours one of the best-selling albums in popular music.
A frequent mistake is naming “Go Your Own Way,” another major Rumours single. That song was written by Lindsey Buckingham and reached the Top 10, but it did not reach No. 1.
