“Our Town” earned an Academy Award nomination for Randy Newman from Pixar’s Cars.
Newman wrote and performed the song for the film’s end credits. Its reflective lyrics focus on change, memory, and the fading fortunes of a once-busy town, matching Radiator Springs’ history after traffic moves to the interstate.
The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 79th Academy Awards. It did not win; the award went to “I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, performed and written by Melissa Etheridge.
Cars also features other prominent songs, including “Life Is a Highway,” performed by Rascal Flatts, and “Real Gone,” performed by Sheryl Crow. Those songs are associated with the film but are not the Academy Award-nominated Newman composition.
