The performance was staged as a journey through the fictional and atmospheric world associated with Folklore and Evermore. Swift began “Cardigan” while lying on top of a cottage set, then moved inside the cottage to sing “august” with a guitar. The final section, “Willow,” took place outside.
“Cardigan,” “august,” and “Betty” are the three Folklore songs that portray different viewpoints in one fictional teenage love triangle. However, “Betty” was not part of the Grammy medley. The closing song, “Willow,” came from Evermore, which Swift released later in 2020.
This sequence is therefore both a performance order and an album distinction: “Cardigan” and “august” come from Folklore, while “Willow” comes from Evermore.
