“Ruby Tuesday” was the Rolling Stones song originally identified by the working title “Title B” during the sessions connected with *Between the Buttons*. The finished song became one of the band’s best-known recordings and was released in January 1967.
Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “Ruby Tuesday” was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in late 1966. Brian Jones added distinctive color to the arrangement, including the alto recorder countermelody, while the song’s piano-led sound helped give it a more baroque, reflective character than the Stones’ earlier blues-rock hits.
A common source of confusion is the album’s different British and American editions. In the United States, “Ruby Tuesday” appeared on *Between the Buttons*; the British edition omitted it because the song had already been issued as part of a double-A-side single with “Let’s Spend the Night Together.” In America, “Ruby Tuesday” reached number one.
