Which song by Queen is widely credited as the first major promotional music video?

The story behind the answer

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is widely credited as the first major promotional music video.

Queen filmed the promotional clip in November 1975 while the band was unable to appear live on the BBC music program Top of the Pops. The video used performance footage, dramatic close-ups, studio effects, and imagery of the group arranged in a diamond formation. It allowed the song to be promoted on television without requiring Queen to perform in person.

Earlier promotional films and filmed performances existed, so the claim does not mean Queen invented every kind of music film. Rather, “Bohemian Rhapsody” became a landmark because it was made specifically for television promotion and received unusually broad exposure. The song topped the UK Singles Chart and later returned to the chart after the 1991 death of Freddie Mercury and its appearance in the film Wayne’s World.
