Which song became The Beatles’ first UK number-one single in 1963?

The story behind the answer

“From Me to You” became The Beatles’ first UK number-one single in 1963.

Written mainly by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the song was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on March 5, 1963. Parlophone released it in the United Kingdom on April 11, backed by “Thank You Girl.” It reached the top of the Record Retailer chart in May, giving the group its first UK chart-topper.

The song followed “Please Please Me,” which had achieved major success but did not top every contemporary UK chart. “From Me to You” was more consistent across the principal listings used at the time and is generally recognized as the Beatles’ first UK number-one single.

It is often confused with “She Loves You,” the later 1963 smash that made the group’s popularity explode. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” became their first US number one in 1964. Those songs were crucial milestones, but “From Me to You” came first in the UK.
