Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” became his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 when the remix featuring Justin Bieber topped the chart in 2017.
Fonsi originally released the Spanish-language song with Daddy Yankee in January 2017. Justin Bieber later appeared on a remix that preserved the song’s Spanish chorus while adding an English-language verse, helping it reach a much wider international audience.
The recording reached No. 1 in May 2017 and remained there for 16 weeks. It was the first primarily Spanish-language song to lead the Hot 100 since “Macarena” in 1996.
The song’s success is sometimes described as belonging only to Bieber or only to Fonsi. The credited hit is a collaboration among Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber on the remix version.
