Which son of J.R.R. Tolkien edited and published The Silmarillion after Tolkien’s death?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien edited and published The Silmarillion after his father’s death.

The Silmarillion was published in 1977, four years after J.R.R. Tolkien died. It is a collection of mythological and historical narratives about the creation of the world, the Valar, the Elves, and the First Age of Middle-earth. The material existed in many drafts and versions, so Christopher had to organize and edit it into a publishable form.

Christopher Tolkien continued editing his father’s literary papers for decades. His work also produced later publications such as Unfinished Tales and the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is not a conventional sequel to The Lord of the Rings; it is instead a deep background history of Tolkien’s invented world.
