Which solar power station in Spain was the first commercial solar-thermal tower plant?
Answer
PS10 solar power tower
Answer
PS10 solar power tower
PS10 solar power tower was the first commercial solar-thermal tower plant in Spain.
Located near Sanlúcar la Mayor in Andalusia, PS10 began commercial operation in 2007. Hundreds of computer-controlled heliostats reflect sunlight toward a receiver at the top of a central tower. The receiver produces steam, which drives a turbine and generator.
PS10 is a concentrating solar power facility, not a conventional photovoltaic solar farm. Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, while PS10 first converts concentrated solar heat into steam and then mechanical and electrical energy. This distinction explains why the plant is categorized as solar thermal.
The project helped establish the Solúcar solar complex near Seville, which later included additional concentrating-solar technologies. PS10 also demonstrated that tower systems could operate commercially at utility scale, although later plants improved efficiency and incorporated more heat storage.
