Facebook adopted the corporate name Meta Platforms in 2021.
Facebook, Inc. announced the name change to Meta Platforms, Inc. in October 2021. The Facebook social network kept the Facebook name, while the new corporate identity emphasized the company’s interest in building the metaverse, a collection of immersive virtual and augmented digital environments.
The company also owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. These services generate much of its advertising business, while Reality Labs develops virtual-reality hardware and software such as the Quest headset.
The rebranding did not turn Facebook into a new publicly traded company. Meta Platforms remained the listed parent corporation, and its market capitalization continued to rise or fall according to the value investors placed on the whole business. The company’s ticker symbol changed from FB to META in June 2022.
