Which snake is widely regarded as the fastest-moving land snake?

The story behind the answer

The black mamba is widely regarded as the fastest-moving land snake.

It can reach roughly 16–20 km/h (10–12 mph) in short bursts, especially when escaping danger. Its speed is aided by its long, slender body and powerful muscles, although it does not normally chase people. The species is native to much of sub-Saharan Africa and uses trees, abandoned termite mounds, and other sheltered places.

The name is often misunderstood: the snake is usually olive, gray, or brown outside, while “black” refers to the dark lining of its mouth. Black mambas are highly venomous and may raise the front part of the body when threatened. Speed records for wild snakes are difficult to measure precisely, so published figures are generally estimates rather than results from standardized races.

The black mamba is also one of Africa’s largest venomous snakes, commonly reaching more than 2 metres in length.
