Eastern indigo snake
Answer
Eastern indigo snake
The eastern indigo snake is the longest snake species native to North America.
The eastern indigo snake, Drymarchon couperi, is a large, nonvenomous colubrid native to the southeastern United States. It is known for its glossy blue-black body, reddish or orange colouring around the throat in many individuals, and generally calm behaviour.
Adults can exceed 2.5 metres, making the species the longest native snake in North America. It is a powerful predator that eats frogs, lizards, turtles, birds, mammals, and other snakes, including venomous species.
The species has suffered from habitat loss, road mortality, and illegal collection. It was listed as threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act in 1978. Conservation work includes protecting longleaf-pine ecosystems and restoring populations in parts of its former range.
