Which snake is the largest venomous snake native to Australia?

The story behind the answer

The king brown snake is the largest venomous snake native to Australia.

The king brown snake, Pseudechis australis, is also called the mulga snake. It is found across much of Australia, especially in dry inland and northern regions, and can reach about 3 metres in length. Its common name is misleading: it belongs to the black snake genus Pseudechis rather than the true brown snake genus Pseudonaja.

King brown snakes are robust and adaptable predators. Their diet includes frogs, reptiles, birds, mammals, and even other snakes. They may remain active in conditions that are too dry or hot for many other species.

Their venom can cause serious muscle injury and other medical complications. The king brown’s claim concerns body size among Australia’s venomous snakes, not venom toxicity. Australia also has the eastern brown snake and inland taipan, but those species are commonly discussed for different records.
