Brahminy blind snake
Answer
Brahminy blind snake
The Brahminy blind snake is also known as the flowerpot snake because it spreads through transported plant soil.
This tiny species spends much of its life underground, where it feeds on ants, termites, and their larvae. Its burrowing habits make it easy to move unnoticed in the soil surrounding nursery plants. When those plants are shipped or transplanted, the snakes can establish populations far from their original range.
The species is especially successful because all known individuals are female and reproduction occurs by parthenogenesis. A single transported snake can therefore reproduce without a mate. This unusual biology combines with human movement of plants to explain its wide distribution across tropical and subtropical regions.
Despite its name, the Brahminy blind snake is not blind in the absolute sense. Its eyes are greatly reduced and covered by scales, reflecting its underground lifestyle. It is harmless and is often mistaken for a worm because of its small, slender body.
