Which snake family includes the puff adder and Gaboon viper?

The story behind the answer

The snake family Viperidae includes the puff adder and Gaboon viper.

Viperidae is the family of vipers, a major group of venomous snakes found across much of the world. Its members include Old World vipers and pit vipers, although classifications divide the family into subfamilies and genera in different ways.

The puff adder belongs to the genus Bitis, as does the Gaboon viper. Vipers characteristically have long, hinged fangs at the front of the mouth. These fangs can fold back when the mouth is closed and rotate forward during a strike.

Viperidae is often confused with Elapidae, the family that includes cobras, mambas and coral snakes. Elapids also have front fangs, but their fangs are generally shorter and fixed rather than the highly hinged fangs typical of vipers.
