Which snake family contains the true pythons, including the reticulated python?

The story behind the answer

The family containing the true pythons, including the reticulated python, is Pythonidae.

Pythonidae is a family of constricting snakes found mainly in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Its members include the reticulated python, Burmese python, Indian python, and green tree python. They are nonvenomous and subdue prey by constriction rather than injecting venom.

Pythons are often confused with boas because both groups are large constrictors. They belong to separate families, however. Boas are placed in Boidae, while true pythons are placed in Pythonidae. Pythons also generally lay eggs, whereas many boas give birth to live young.

The reticulated python is one of the most celebrated members of the family because of its exceptional length. Species in Pythonidae occupy habitats ranging from rainforests and wetlands to savannas, and their diets commonly include mammals and birds appropriate to their size.
