Which Smashing Pumpkins album contains the singles “1979” and “Tonight, Tonight”?

The story behind the answer

The Smashing Pumpkins album containing “1979” and “Tonight, Tonight” is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Released on October 24, 1995, it was the Chicago band’s third studio album and a large-scale double record. Billy Corgan wrote most of the songs, while the group expanded its sound beyond the heavy guitar style associated with Siamese Dream.

“Tonight, Tonight” became known for its orchestral arrangement and Georges Méliès-inspired music video. “1979,” by contrast, uses electronic loops and a more understated arrangement to evoke adolescence and suburban life.

The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 and received seven Grammy nominations. It is sometimes shortened in conversation to “Mellon Collie,” but the complete official title includes “and the Infinite Sadness.”
