Valletta is Malta’s capital city, built on the Sciberras Peninsula between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Its compact historic centre is famous for dense Baroque architecture, fortifications, churches and palaces.
The city was founded by the Knights Hospitaller after they repelled the Ottoman invasion during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette laid its foundation stone on 28 March 1566, and the city took his name. Valletta became the capital in 1571, replacing Birgu as the Knights’ seat of government.
A common mix-up is confusing Malta with Valletta: Malta is the country, while Valletta is its capital. Valletta is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the European Union’s smallest capital cities by area.
