This Alpine principality occupies about 160 square kilometres in the Upper Rhine valley. Switzerland lies along its western and southern sides, while Austria borders it to the east and north. The Rhine forms much of the Swiss frontier, giving the country a distinctive geographic boundary.

Liechtenstein is more precisely described as doubly landlocked: both of its neighbours are themselves landlocked. Only one other sovereign state, Uzbekistan, shares that unusual distinction. The country’s capital is Vaduz, although Schaan is its largest municipality by population.

The answer is sometimes confused with San Marino or Vatican City, but both are enclaves surrounded only by Italy. Liechtenstein’s political history also differs: it became a principality in 1719 and fully independent after the German Confederation dissolved in 1866. Since 1923, it has had a customs and monetary union with Switzerland and uses the Swiss franc.
