Yaren is a district on Nauru’s southern coast and contains the country’s government offices, Parliament House, police station, and main administrative buildings. It also hosts Nauru International Airport, making it the island’s practical political and transport hub.
The wording “de facto capital” matters. Nauru has no officially designated capital city, and it has no cities in the usual municipal sense. Yaren is therefore commonly described as the de facto capital, although Aiwo is sometimes mentioned because several government facilities are located there too. Yaren is also one of Nauru’s political constituencies and returns two members to Parliament.
The district covers about 1.5 square kilometres. Its older names, Makwa and Moqua, are connected with Moqua Well, an underground freshwater source. Yaren’s location beside the coast and near the island’s central government infrastructure explains why it became the accepted answer rather than a formally proclaimed capital.
