Monaco has Monte Carlo as one of its four traditional quarters.
Monaco’s four traditional quarters are Monaco-Ville, La Condamine, Monte Carlo and Fontvieille. They run broadly from west to east, with Monte Carlo occupying the eastern part of the principality near the French border. The name is strongly associated with casinos, luxury hotels and the French Riviera.
Monte Carlo’s development accelerated after Prince Charles III granted a casino concession in 1856. The first casino opened in La Condamine in 1862, but the operation later moved to the area known as Les Spélugues. The arrival of the railway in 1868 helped bring visitors and transformed Monte Carlo into an international resort.
A common mix-up is treating Monte Carlo as Monaco’s capital or as a separate country. Monaco is the sovereign state, while Monte Carlo is one of its quarters and wards. The famous Casino de Monte-Carlo, Hôtel de Paris and Salle Garnier are located in this area, although “Monte Carlo” is sometimes used informally for a broader district.
