Which Slovenian lake contains Bled Island?

The story behind the answer

Lake Bled is the Slovenian lake that contains Bled Island.

Lake Bled lies in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia beside the town of Bled. Its small island, known as Bled Island or Blejski otok, is the country’s best-known lake island. The island’s principal landmark is the Church of the Assumption of Mary, reached by a Baroque staircase of 99 stone steps.

Visitors traditionally cross the lake in a wooden pletna boat. The standing-rowing technique used by pletna oarsmen is distinctive, and the profession has long been associated with local families. In 1740, Maria Theresa granted 22 families exclusive rights to ferry pilgrims to the island, a tradition often cited in accounts of Bled’s tourism history.

Lake Bled is about 2,120 metres long, 1,380 metres wide, and 29.5 metres deep at maximum. It has mixed glacial and tectonic origins. The medieval Bled Castle overlooks the northern shore, while the surrounding Alpine scenery and the local kremšnita cream pastry help make the lake one of Slovenia’s signature destinations.
