Which sled-dog breed is New Hampshire's official state dog?
Answer
Chinook
Answer
Chinook
New Hampshire’s official state dog is the Chinook.
The Chinook is an American sled-dog breed developed in New Hampshire during the early 20th century. Its foundation came from Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalancet, who wanted a strong, dependable working dog with a manageable temperament. The breed’s principal ancestor was a tawny male named Chinook, born in 1917.
Walden combined sled-dog lines with dogs including Greenland Dogs, Mastiff or St. Bernard mixes, Belgian Sheepdogs, German Shepherds, and Canadian Eskimo Dogs. Chinooks worked on sled teams and later served on Admiral Richard Byrd’s 1929 Antarctic expedition. The breed nearly disappeared: by 1981, only 11 breedable Chinooks reportedly remained.
The Chinook is sometimes confused with northern breeds such as the Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute, but its history is distinctly New England. It became New Hampshire’s official state dog and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2013.
