Which Argentine breed was developed for big-game hunting, including wild boar?

The story behind the answer

Which Argentine breed was developed for big-game hunting, including wild boar? The answer is Dogo Argentino.

The breed was developed in Córdoba, Argentina, during the early 20th century. In the 1920s, brothers Antonio and Agustín Nores Martínez set out to create a powerful hunting dog with the courage of the Old Córdoba Fighting Dog, but greater size, stamina, and versatility.

The breeding program combined several breeds, including Bull Terrier, Pyrenean Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Boxer, Great Dane, Dogue de Bordeaux, and Spanish Mastiff. The resulting dog was intended to pursue and hold large prey such as wild boar, peccaries, and pumas. Its white coat, athletic build, strong nose, and endurance suited demanding hunts.

A common mix-up is treating the Dogo Argentino as simply a fighting breed because of some ancestors in its lineage. Its defining purpose, however, was large-game hunting. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale definitively accepted it in 1973.
