Which sled-dog breed is named after the Mahlemut people of Alaska?

The story behind the answer

The sled-dog breed named after the Mahlemut people of Alaska is the Alaskan Malamute.

The breed’s name refers to the Malimiut, or Mahlemut, an Inupiaq people associated with Alaska’s Norton Sound region. These dogs lived and worked closely with their human companions in the Arctic, where dependable transport was essential.

Unlike racing sled dogs bred primarily for speed, Alaskan Malamutes were developed for heavy freighting. Teams hauled large loads of supplies between settlements and camps, and the dogs also helped with hunting, packing, and detecting seals at breathing holes.

The breed’s history is sometimes confused with that of the Siberian Husky or Canadian Eskimo Dog. All are northern working breeds, but the Malamute is particularly associated with strength and freight hauling. It also served during the Klondike Gold Rush and in military search-and-rescue work. Alaska designated it the official state dog in 2010.
