Which singer used the stage name Poly Styrene with the punk band X-Ray Spex?
Answer
Marianne Elliott-Said
Answer
Marianne Elliott-Said
Poly Styrene was the stage name of singer Marianne Elliott-Said, who fronted X-Ray Spex.
Born in Brixton, London, in 1957, Elliott-Said adopted the name Poly Styrene in 1976. The deliberately artificial name reflected her interest in consumer culture and the manufactured look of modern life. With X-Ray Spex, she became known for a distinctive vocal style and songs that challenged conventional pop and punk expectations.
The band's best-known single, "Oh Bondage Up Yours!," was released in 1977 and became an important early punk recording. X-Ray Spex also stood out because saxophonist Lora Logic and later Rudi Thomson added an unusual horn presence to the group's sound. Poly Styrene left the band in 1979, later recorded as a solo artist, and died in 2011. She is not the same person as Marianne Faithfull.
