Which Silla ruler is traditionally linked to the early Gabae celebration associated with Chuseok?

The story behind the answer

King Yuri of Silla is traditionally linked to the early Gabae celebration associated with Chuseok.

According to the Samguk Sagi, during the reign of Silla’s King Yuri, teams of women took part in a month-long weaving competition. The contest culminated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the losing side hosted food and entertainment for the winners.

This event is commonly presented as an early historical precedent for Chuseok. The modern holiday developed through layers of agricultural customs, lunar-calendar observances, family rites, and later national traditions, so historians do not treat the Gabae account as a complete description of today’s festival.

King Yuri ruled Silla in the early first century. The story is important because it provides one of the oldest written links between a mid-autumn celebration and a Silla royal court.
