Born Tyag Mal in Amritsar in 1621, Tegh Bahadur was Hargobind’s youngest son. Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, promoted the paired ideals of miri and piri—temporal responsibility and spiritual authority—and trained Sikhs in martial skills. Tegh Bahadur inherited both the family’s spiritual learning and its experience of Mughal-Sikh conflict.

Tegh Bahadur became the ninth Sikh Guru in 1665, succeeding Guru Har Krishan. He travelled widely, established Anandpur Sahib, and composed hymns later included in the Guru Granth Sahib. His son was Gobind Rai, later Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru.

A common mix-up is reversing the family relationship: Guru Hargobind was the father of Guru Tegh Bahadur, while Guru Arjan was Hargobind’s father. Tegh Bahadur was beheaded in Delhi in 1675 on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
